The Vox article that I was interviewed for is up and running, and it contains some serious fuckign information about this whole fiasco.

Information that tumblr just straight up refused to provide to its userbase at all.

Unsurprisingly to those of us watching this website deteriorate over the last year, this full content purge and ban has been in progress for a solid 6 months. The date got moved up because of the child porn thing, but it was always coming for us.

Equally unsurprising: Tumblr’s management and ownership are absolutely destroying the actual staff working on it. The company has been hemoragghing senior staff without so much as a token attempt to keep them in place. So the drops in site quality are real, and wil probably only be getting worse.

Truly astonishing is the fact that apparently this crap was supposed to “double” the userbase by the end of next year. Boy, howdy, that’s not gonna work out well for them.

So, about the adult content ban…

I’m curious how this is going to affect my blog. I’ve shared the occasional bit of artwork with nudity, I’ve posted my own bits of life drawing in the past (which I’m starting up again soon), and I have miniatures that feature nudity (like the Raging Heroes and Creature Caster Keeper of Secrets alternatives). On Dec. 17th, does that all go away? Do I have to not share all the things I’m working on if it’s not entirely PG-13? I’ve got a Daughters of Khaine army cued up to build and paint soon - would the Bloodwrack Medusa be banned?

Also, this is especially terrible for the adult artists who use Tumblr to promote and share their work. Between Patreon making them invisible in searches, and Tumblr cutting them off entirely, it’s going to be harder and harder for them to find good platforms for advertising their work and making a living.

In the end, it’s @staff’s decision because it’s their service, but it seems a brute force knee jerk reaction to the other issues they’re having.
